| I broke the 3rd member, the part the has the Pinion and holds the actual diff.
Not the part the holds the Axles.
However, If I'm gonna buy one part, I may as well replace all the cast aluminum parts with steel.
I'm even thinking of altering the ratio (F/R) to 5.12 or higher, The 5.72's are >800euros (F+R) WOW! (www.mas4x4.com)
Before I buy new pinion & rings, I need to count again my calculations, I think I did it wrong the first time..
And my heart want lockers too!, but bank does not! | |

| Well, how the hell did you break the hard part? The usual problem is the shell made of alluminium. Your Vitara should have: 39/8 crown and pinion with 26 splines shafts In the front with 10 bolts in the crown wheel and 12 in the back. You should find similar setups on all the 1.9TD versions (SWB) and 1.6 16v from 1996/1997 forward. Don't lower the ratio changing the crown and pinion, because you will change the ration even on normal conditions. Change the transfer box gears, you keep the High Range gears with the same ratio and only lower the low gears. The 5.12 (41/ will give you around 300RPM extra at the same speed. | |

| 4.8x is what I calculated. How I did that.....
I lifted one wheel, and locked the other. I marked the center shaft, spin the wheel one time around, and counted 2.4x turns of the center shaft.
Cause one wheel is blocked, the diff doubles the count, so my final number was 2.4x2 = 4.8x
I can legally run 31"s or 235/85R16 (~32"), which was my idea for the 5.12 or 5.72's..
Also I find the current gap from 1st to 2nd gear too big, the 5.72 will help alot there, but I will lose my top speed of 140km/h that I have now with 28"s tires.
I don't need the top speed, but the different from 4.8 to 5.12 is to small to pay the money, but 4.83 to 5.72 (+18.5%) than take into account 13% bigger tires, I will still be 5.5% lower(18.5-13=5.5 ish), I'll lose 5.5% of 140= 133km/h which is still good.
Of course, I can't run 32"s right now, I need more lift! and anyway, I am thinking this my brain not my wallet....
The plan "WAS" to get a set of 235/70R16's Special Tracks now, which are 4-6% bigger than my current tires.
How did I BRAKE it, easy answer, Pe Pesado! Oh, to add more info, My front diff is Dropped 3"(7cm), that is probably why i did not stress the House but I stressed the 3rd member cause its on more of an angle now. | |

But the "bang for the buck" is in replacing 4.875 for the 5.125, it's way more cheaper that finding the 5.75 that you want. Any how, good luck. If i "see" something here i will let you know. | |
